Challenging (In)justice

Barnardo’s, Manchester Metropolitan University & Administrative Data Research UK

The Barnardo’s report Double Discrimination highlights how young people in care, particularly Black children, are disproportionately caught up in the criminal justice system and proposes practical solutions to better support them. Barnardo’s, MMU, and ADR UK needed a hard-hitting animation to launch this report, with the aim of translating complex research into a visual, accessible format that could engage policymakers, service providers, journalists, and the public. They wanted the animation to make a ‘noise’.

The goal was to create a visually engaging animation that showed the realities of racism, discrimination, exclusion, and over-policing in care. It aimed to make complex research accessible to policymakers, journalists, service providers, and the public, with a clear call to action that wasn’t overloaded with data. The animation also sought to authentically represent the experiences of Black children in care, telling their stories honestly to inspire empathy and meaningful change.

The final animation clearly communicated the report’s findings while bringing those lived experiences to life. It supported Barnardo’s and MMU in raising awareness among policymakers and service providers, and helped increase engagement with the issues explored in the research.
