Lives Transformed: 40 Years of Violence and Social Change

University of Warwick

Role: Creative Direction, Illustration, Design, Storyboarding, Animation Production

Brief

The University of Warwick undertook significant research into homicide records kept by police since 1977, examining how patterns of lethal violence have changed over four decades. The research team needed to make dense, complex findings accessible and engaging to audiences well beyond academia - including politicians, policymakers, and the general public.

Approach

Working closely with the University team, I studied the research in depth, not just the data but the human stories behind it. Developing a visual language that could carry the emotional weight of the subject, I used a mixed-media approach, combining hand-drawn illustration, photography, and archival imagery, brought together through digital collage. From there, I collaborated with an animator to complete the piece.

Outcome

The animation helped the University raise awareness of a complex and deeply human issue among policymakers, practitioners, and the wider public. It was presented at the Royal Society of Arts alongside Dame Nicole Jacobs, Domestic Abuse Commissioner, bringing together those with the power to drive real change. Work that goes beyond telling a story - contributing to a wider conversation about violence, victims, and the need for meaningful policy reform.
