Skip Garden

Global Generation

Global Generation is a London-based educational charity founded in 2004. Believing in the creative potential of urban communities, the charity works with young people to foster environmental and social responsibility. It transforms disused urban spaces into vibrant gardens across Camden, Islington, and Southwark, offering places for learning, connection, and growth. One example is the Skip Garden in King’s Cross - an innovative, movable garden built in 2009 using reclaimed materials and created with the help of local youth, students, and volunteers. Their flagship Generator Programme supports young people aged 10–18 to take part in meaningful social action and build practical, creative, and leadership skills.

The task was to create a series of photo stories documenting the work of Global Generation, focusing on their Skip Garden project in King’s Cross. The aim was to capture the garden as a sustainable, community-led space and to tell the stories of three young people involved in its development. The project highlighted the garden’s role as a creative, educational hub that helps young people build skills, confidence, and stronger community connections.

The project resulted in a series of online blogs featuring original photography and written stories. These pieces helped amplify the work of Global Generation, highlighting the environmental and social values behind the Skip Garden. By sharing the experiences of young contributors through visual and personal storytelling, the project demonstrated how initiatives like this can support youth development, strengthen communities, and promote sustainable urban living.
