Challenging (In)justice
Barnardo’s, Manchester Metropolitan University & Administrative Data Research UK
Role: Creative & Art Direction, Illustration, Storyboarding, Animation Production
Brief
The Barnardo’s report Double Discrimination highlights how young people in care, particularly Black children, are disproportionately caught up in the criminal justice system. Complex research about racism, discrimination, and over policing in care needed to be turned into something that would stop policymakers, journalists, and service providers in their tracks. A clear call to action, without being overloaded with data.
Approach
Working closely with Barnardo's and the Manchester Metropolitan University research team, I immersed myself in the research to understand the lived realities behind the data. As creative director, I developed a visual language that could tell these stories honestly and with empathy. I created storyboarding, and illustrating the entire animation before working alongside an animator to bring it to life.
Outcome
The animation brought complex and urgent research to life, putting it directly in front of politicians, policymakers, and those working across the care and justice systems. Presented to Parliament, it helped shine a light on the deeply serious findings of the Double Discrimination report, highlighting how racism is rooted within both the care system and the criminal justice system. The work played a meaningful role in encouraging policymakers to think more deeply, take greater action, and drive real change for Black children in care and beyond.
